An Arborist Assessment Before You Decide on Tree Work

A thinning canopy, a new crack or roots disturbed by a project can leave you unsure whether a tree needs care or removal. Ranger Tree Care offers ISA Certified Arborist services in Melbourne and Brevard County to help you understand the condition of the tree and the options available.

The purpose of an assessment is a useful recommendation, not an automatic removal quote. Depending on the findings, the next step may be pruning, changes to maintenance, further evaluation, monitoring or removal. We explain what the recommendation addresses and what remains uncertain.

We work with homeowners, community boards and property managers. If you are deciding what to do with one tree, preparing a maintenance plan or responding to a request for written findings, tell us that at the start. It helps us arrange the right type of visit.

What a Tree Assessment Can Tell You

An inspection starts with the tree and the area around it. We look at visible canopy, trunk and root-zone conditions, nearby buildings and paths, and any changes you have noticed. A recent lean, repeated branch loss or decline after construction can each lead to different recommendations.

Bring the history you know: storm damage, irrigation changes, trenching, added soil, previous pruning or when the leaves began to change. That information helps put the visible symptoms in context.

A health evaluation and a risk assessment answer different questions. Health concerns how the tree is growing. Risk also considers the possibility of a tree or branch failing and what it could affect. Tell us whether you need advice for maintenance, a removal decision or a written report for a specific purpose so we can confirm the assessment scope.

Our guide to tree risk assessment explains the concerns an evaluation is intended to address.

Tree Health: Symptoms, History and Next Steps

Leaf discoloration, canopy thinning and dead branches are reasons to investigate, but they do not identify a single cause. Root disturbance, watering, site conditions, pests and disease can produce overlapping symptoms. Recommending work from leaf color alone can miss the underlying problem.

Our arborist looks at the visible condition of the tree and asks about recent changes on the property. If the answer requires testing or an examination beyond the agreed visit, we explain that limitation and discuss the next step.

You should leave the conversation knowing what work is recommended, what it is intended to address and what to watch for afterward. If tree removal is recommended, we explain the finding behind that recommendation rather than treating every declining tree the same way.

Investigating Disease and Pest Concerns

Not every insect on a tree is the cause of decline, and not every patch of dead foliage is an infection. Identifying the tree species and the pattern of damage is part of deciding which questions need answering.

When you call, describe whether one branch or the whole canopy is changing, how quickly it happened and whether nearby trees show similar symptoms. Photographs from before the change can be useful. Do not cut away affected material solely to prepare for the visit; ask first if a sample might be useful.

A visual inspection has limits. Where testing or a specialist diagnosis is needed, the recommendation should say so. We discuss realistic care options and any further evaluation needed before you commit to work.

Palm Tree Health Evaluations

Palm health calls for attention to the species, crown, trunk and pattern of leaf changes. A few older fronds declining is different from rapid change across the crown. Describe what changed and when, and bring earlier photographs if you have them.

Our arborist can evaluate visible symptoms and explain whether further testing or specialist input is needed. Similar-looking symptoms can have different causes, so an assessment should come before assuming that fertilizer or pruning will solve the problem.

If pruning is recommended, the scope should identify what needs removing and why. Our tree trimming and pruning service can carry out appropriate work as part of the agreed care plan.

Root Conditions, Drainage and Recent Site Changes

What happens around the roots can affect the rest of the tree. Added soil, trenching, construction traffic and changes in irrigation are worth mentioning during an assessment, even if the work happened before the canopy began to decline.

Sandy soil does not automatically mean poor anchorage or waterlogged roots. Many sandy Florida soils drain quickly, while compaction, a high water table or a restrictive soil layer can change drainage on a particular site. UF/IFAS recommends evaluating drainage, rooting space and site conditions rather than making assumptions from the soil type.

We consider the visible root zone and property history when discussing care. If soil testing or a closer root examination is needed, that should be identified as a next step. Avoid cutting roots or adding fill around an established tree without first understanding the consequences.

Written Findings for Property Decisions

Tell us before the visit if you need written findings for an HOA, property manager, insurer or city. Share any form, deadline or specific question they have given you so we can confirm what the evaluation and report need to cover.

An estimate for tree work and a formal written assessment are different documents. Confirm the scope and any assessment or reporting fee when scheduling. A free tree-work estimate should not be assumed to include every type of report.

We can discuss documentation of the tree condition, recommended work and our insurance information. The organization receiving a report makes its own approval or coverage decision; a report cannot guarantee that outcome. For shared properties, see our HOA tree service page.

A Practical Tree Care Plan for Your Property

A useful care plan separates immediate concerns from work that can be scheduled and changes worth monitoring. That helps a homeowner budget and gives a property manager a clear basis for setting priorities.

The plan may include pruning recommendations, clearance needs, care around the root zone and a time to reassess a particular concern. Inspection frequency should reflect the tree, its condition and how the surrounding area is used, rather than a blanket timetable for every property.

Before storm season, an assessment can identify visible defects and maintenance needs. It cannot promise that a tree will survive every storm. If conditions change after severe weather or construction, arrange a follow-up rather than relying on an older assessment.

Working with an ISA Certified Arborist

Ranger Tree Care has an ISA Certified Arborist on the team. That credential is relevant when you need informed advice about tree health, structure and care, as well as a reasoned explanation of the recommended work.

Be clear about the decision you need help with. A homeowner comparing pruning and removal has different needs from a condominium board requesting written findings for several trees. We discuss the purpose, scope and documentation before arranging the assessment.

Ranger Tree Care is veteran and woman-owned, insured and bonded. Our goal is to help you make a practical decision about the trees on your property.

FAQs About Arborist Services

What does an ISA Certified Arborist do?

An ISA Certified Arborist is a tree-care professional who has earned the ISA credential. At Ranger Tree Care, arborist services help property owners evaluate tree health and structural concerns and decide on appropriate care. The scope can differ from an estimate to perform pruning or removal.

When should I arrange a tree assessment?

Arrange an assessment when a tree develops a new lean, cracks, repeated branch loss or unexplained decline, or when construction has affected its root area. An assessment can also help with maintenance planning. If there is immediate danger or downed electrical equipment, keep away and contact emergency services or the utility first.

Can you tell me whether a tree needs removal?

We assess the visible condition, surrounding property and available options. Removal may be recommended, but pruning, monitoring or further evaluation may be appropriate in other cases. A recommendation should explain the reasons and any limits of the assessment.

Is a consultation or written arborist report free?

Ranger Tree Care offers free estimates for tree work. An arborist assessment or formal written report can involve a different scope. Tell us what you need when you call so we can confirm the service and any fee before scheduling.

Can I use an arborist report for an HOA or insurance request?

Share the requirements from the organization before scheduling so we can confirm whether the requested documentation is within the assessment scope. An estimate and a formal report are different. The HOA, insurer or public authority makes its own decision about approval or coverage.

Do you assess palm trees?

Yes. We can evaluate visible palm health and structural concerns and discuss appropriate next steps. Some conditions need testing or further specialist evaluation. A visual inspection does not establish that every discolored palm has the same disease or needs the same treatment.

Can an inspection guarantee that my tree will not fall?

No. An assessment considers the conditions that can be evaluated at that time. It cannot remove all uncertainty or predict every storm. Follow the recommendations and arrange another assessment if the tree or site conditions change.
